The Salt Market of Dunveil

📍 Dunveil — The Salt Market · July 2026

Thoron and Nova arrive in Dunveil — a fog-wrapped market town at the edge of a sunken valley, where the stalls trade in bottled echoes, preserved memories, and cursed salt that keeps the dead from forgetting your name. An old cartographer named Orlen Fitch finds them before they find him. He hands them a map that was already dreaming about them — one that leads southwest, toward the Thornwater Basin.

Orlen Fitch is old in the way that maps are old — worn at the edges, densely detailed, unlikely to be wrong. He breathes slowly, like each exhale costs something. 'I drew it while dreaming about you,' he said. 'Don't read into that.' Nova looked at Thoron. Thoron looked at Nova. Neither of them asked. They had learned, in Shadowmere, that some answers arrived faster if you didn't go looking for them.

INT. SALT MARKET — DUNVEIL — DUSK

The town smells like brine and old regret. Dunveil sits at the edge of a sunken valley where the fog rolls in thick every evening and doesn't leave until it's ready. Amber lanterns hang from iron hooks along cobblestone lanes. The stalls sell things that aren't supposed to be sold — bottled echoes, preserved memories, and cursed salt that keeps the dead from remembering your name.

Thoron and Nova walk through the market like they belong there. They don't.

NOVA

(eyeing a jar of something moving) What exactly is "preserved memory"?

THORON

Something you don't open on an empty stomach.

NOVA

Helpful. Very helpful.

A stall ahead is unmanned — just a folded map twitching in the wind. Nova reaches for it. Thoron catches her wrist.

THORON

Don't. Markets like this have rules about touching things uninvited.

NOVA

I wasn't going to steal it.

THORON

You were absolutely going to steal it.

A voice behind them:

ORLEN FITCH

You can have it. It already knows your names.

They turn. Orlen Fitch is old in the way that maps are old — worn at the edges, densely detailed, unlikely to be wrong. He breathes slowly, like each exhale costs something.

THORON

How does a map know our names?

ORLEN

I drew it while dreaming about you. (beat) Don't read into that.

NOVA

We're not going to ask.

THORON

We are absolutely not going to ask.

Orlen unfolds the map on the stall counter. It shifts — ink moving slowly, roads updating in real time like the land itself is checking its own work. He points to a blank stretch southwest of where they stand.

ORLEN

Thornwater Basin. Most cartographers leave it white. I went once. Came back with more bones than I left with.

NOVA

That's not — how does that —

ORLEN

Don't think about it too hard.

He folds the map and slides it across. Nova takes it this time. No one stops her.

THORON

(studying Orlen) What do you want for it?

ORLEN

Nothing. Maps want to be used. This one's been waiting for the right feet.

A pause. The amber lanterns flicker. Somewhere deeper in the market, something rattles.

NOVA

(quietly, to Thoron) Do you trust him?

THORON

(quietly back) I trust the map. He's a bonus.

They leave Orlen at his stall, already half-disappeared into the fog. The map pulses faintly in Nova's hands. She tucks it into her coat.

NOVA

Thornwater Basin. Sounds peaceful.

THORON

It never sounds like what it is.

NOVA

Is that wisdom or pessimism?

THORON

(walking ahead) Yes.

The fog closes behind them. Dunveil carries on without them — selling, trading, forgetting. The salt keeps doing its work.

EXT. ROAD OUT OF DUNVEIL — CONTINUOUS

Two figures, a map that breathes, and a basin that collects more than water.

The road continues.

CUT TO BLACK.
