Shadowmere/Chapter 2
Chapter 2

The Town of Ashenveil

📍 Ashenveil · February 2026

The first settlement inside Shadowmere is Ashenveil — a town that appears prosperous from a distance and hollow up close. The people speak in careful sentences. The inn serves food that has no taste. And the town's well has been sealed with iron and wax, the date of sealing scratched into the stone: three days ago.

The innkeeper smiled too long when she handed them their keys. Not an unfriendly smile — a practiced one, the kind worn by people who have been told to smile and have forgotten what it was for. 'You'll want to stay inside tonight,' she said. 'The fog comes early here.' Nova watched the woman's hands. They were shaking. 'What's in the well?' Nova asked. The smile held. 'Nothing,' the innkeeper said. 'That's the problem.'

EXT. ASHENVEIL — TWILIGHT

A town that appears prosperous from a distance. Thatched roofs. Warm light in windows. Smoke from chimneys. Up close, everything is slightly wrong.

THORON

It looks normal.

NOVA

It looks like something pretending to be normal. There's a difference.

The innkeeper smiled too long when she handed them their keys. Not an unfriendly smile — a practiced one, the kind worn by people who have been told to smile and have forgotten what it was for.

INNKEEPER

You'll want to stay inside tonight. The fog comes early here.

Nova watched the woman's hands. They were shaking.

NOVA

What's in the well?

The smile held.

INNKEEPER

Nothing. That's the problem.

INT. THE INN — NIGHT

The food arrived on clean plates. It looked perfect. Thoron took a bite and chewed slowly.

THORON

There's no taste.

NOVA

None?

THORON

It's like eating the idea of food. The shape is right. The substance is missing.

Nova pushed her plate away and looked out the window. The fog had arrived — thick, low, moving with a purpose that fog should not have.

NOVA

The well was sealed three days ago. Iron and wax. Someone scratched the date into the stone.

THORON

Three days ago is when the gatekeeper vanished.

NOVA

I know.

A sound from outside — not a scream, not a voice. Something between the two. The fog pressed against the window like it was listening.

THORON

What is this place?

NOVA

A town that's forgetting what it is. The food has no taste because the town is losing its… substance. Whatever holds a place together — memory, meaning, connection — it's draining out.

THORON

Draining where?

Nova looked east, toward the interior of Shadowmere, toward the place they had not yet named but both already felt pulling at the edges of their awareness.

NOVA

Toward whatever sealed that well.

CUT TO BLACK.
