Maren the Ashen
📍 The Ashen House, Ashenveil · February 2026
At the edge of Ashenveil, in a house built from the bones of a structure that burned long ago, they find Maren — the bone reader, the Ashen. She has been expecting them. She has been expecting them for eleven years. She casts the bones and tells them what the Void wants. It is not what they expected.
“The bones scattered across the dark cloth and settled into a pattern Maren had seen before — once, in a dream, when she was seven years old. She had drawn it in the dirt the next morning and her mother had covered it with her foot and told her never to draw it again. She had not. Until now. 'The Void doesn't want Shadowmere,' Maren said quietly. 'It wants what Shadowmere is protecting.' She looked at Nova. Nova looked at her hands.”
EXT. THE ASHEN HOUSE — EDGE OF ASHENVEIL — DAWN
A house built from the bones of a structure that burned long ago. The walls are charred timber and salvaged stone. Smoke rises from a chimney that looks older than the house itself.
THORON
She's expecting us?
NOVA
She's been expecting us for eleven years.
THORON
How do you know that?
NOVA
Because she told the innkeeper. And the innkeeper told the fog. And the fog told me.
THORON
…That's not how information works.
NOVA
It is here.
INT. THE ASHEN HOUSE — CONTINUOUS
The interior is warm and dark. Bones hang from the ceiling — animal bones, carved and etched with symbols that move when you look away. A cloth is spread on a table. Bone fragments rest in a wooden bowl.
MAREN THE ASHEN sits at the table. She is old in the way mountains are old — not frail, but worn smooth by time. Her eyes are clear and utterly without mercy.
MAREN
Sit.
They sat.
MAREN
I will cast the bones. You will not speak until they settle. The bones do not like interruption.
She poured the fragments onto the cloth. They scattered and settled into a pattern she had seen before — once, in a dream, when she was seven years old. She had drawn it in the dirt the next morning and her mother had covered it with her foot and told her never to draw it again.
She had not. Until now.
MAREN
(quietly) The Void doesn't want Shadowmere.
THORON
Then what does it want?
MAREN
It wants what Shadowmere is protecting.
She looked at Nova. Nova looked at her hands.
MAREN
You know what you are, child.
NOVA
I know what people think I am.
MAREN
Those are different things. The bones don't care what people think. They care what is true.
She gathered the fragments back into the bowl with careful hands.
MAREN
The Void is not a place. It is a hunger. And it has been patient for a very long time. You will need to cross the Blackwood Forest to understand why it is moving now. You will need to survive what lives there.
THORON
What lives there?
MAREN
Everything that every culture on every world has ever been afraid of. The Blackwood collects nightmares the way I collect bones.
She handed Nova a small pouch — black salt, dried rowan, and a bone shard that felt warm.
MAREN
When the forest tests you — and it will — remember: the bones do not lie. But they do not tell the whole truth either. That part is up to you.
CUT TO BLACK.
