The Forest of Unfinished Things

📍 The Forest of Unfinished Things · March 2026

To reach the Void's border, Thoron and Nova must pass through the Forest of Unfinished Things — a place where every path leads somewhere it was never meant to go, where the trees grow in the shapes of interrupted gestures, and where travelers sometimes meet earlier versions of themselves.

ThoronNova Ashcroft

The first tree they passed had grown into the shape of a hand reaching upward — fingers splayed, frozen mid-reach, bark black and smooth as polished stone. Nova stopped walking. 'It was trying to catch something,' she said. Thoron looked at the hand-tree and then at the dozen others around it, each one a different gesture, each one stopped. 'Or let something go,' he said. Nova looked at him. It was the most perceptive thing he had said since they crossed the gate. She didn't tell him that. He would stop doing it.

EXT. THE FOREST OF UNFINISHED THINGS — DAY (BARELY)

The canopy is so dense that daylight arrives as a rumor. The trees grow in the shapes of interrupted gestures — hands reaching, mouths opening, bodies turning. Every one of them stopped mid-motion.

NOVA

It was trying to catch something.

Thoron looked at the hand-tree and then at the dozen others around it, each one a different gesture, each one stopped.

THORON

Or let something go.

Nova looked at him. It was the most perceptive thing he had said since they crossed the gate. She didn't tell him that. He would stop doing it.

EXT. DEEPER IN THE FOREST — CONTINUOUS

The path split. Both directions looked identical. Both felt wrong.

NOVA

The Forest of Unfinished Things keeps everything that was started and never completed. Abandoned spells. Half-spoken promises. Interrupted lives.

THORON

So the trees are…

NOVA

Gestures that were never finished. Words that were never spoken. Choices that were never made. The forest grew around them.

A figure appeared on the left path — distant, walking away from them. It wore Thoron's coat. It moved with Thoron's gait.

THORON

Is that—

NOVA

An earlier version of you. A version that made a different choice at some point. Don't follow it.

THORON

What happens if I follow it?

NOVA

You become the unfinished thing.

They took the right path. Behind them, the figure stopped walking and turned around. It watched them leave with Thoron's face and someone else's eyes.

EXT. THE EDGE OF BLACKWOOD FOREST — DUSK

The Forest of Unfinished Things ended abruptly — one step, trees of frozen gestures; the next step, trees of living black bark that breathed.

NOVA

The Blackwood.

THORON

It's watching us.

NOVA

It's been watching us since we entered Shadowmere. It's just closer now.

Something moved in the canopy — large, deliberate, and patient. The Blackwood Forest did not introduce itself. It simply made clear that they had entered its jurisdiction.

THORON

How many creatures are in there?

NOVA

Every mythology in the world sent its darkest. The Blackwood collected them all.

THORON

That's not an answer.

NOVA

(stepping into the dark between the trees) It's the only honest one.

CUT TO BLACK.
